SUMMARY:Screening: STEPHEN KING'S SILVER BULLET with Director Dan Attias
DESCRIPTION:Co-presented by Verbatim Books \nDoors at 6:00; Show at 7:00 \nThis show is at The Adams Ave Theater (3325 Adams Ave\, San Diego\, CA 92116) \nSILVER BULLET director Dan Attias will be joining us live on stage to discuss the film after we screen it \nBrowse through Verbatim’s Haunted Book Table inside the venue pre-show\, where Mr. Attias will also be signing copies of his book\, Directing Great Television: Inside TV’s New Golden Age. \nAlso…come dressed in your best Halloween costume and win a prize (Details below) \nBeer\, wine\, and refreshments will be available for purchase at the theater \n \nSince we got the October 30th date at The Adams Ave Theater this year\, we figured we’d go all out and throw what we’d argue is the craziest Halloween Film Party of all time (in San Diego at least). What should we show? It was really a no brainer. How about the ultimate 80s spooky autumn film? No film has captured the aura of Halloween season during this nostalgic-drenched era better in our eyes\, and if you’ve somehow made it through your life without ever seeing it\, well\, you’ve got a real opportunity coming up. On October 30th\, join us\, along with our co-presenter Verbatim Books\, as we bring STEPHEN KING’S SILVER BULLET back to the big screen for our First Ever Halloween Bash\, with the director of the film\, Dan Attias\, joining us live for a post-film discussion. \nIn the small town of Tarker’s Mills\, Maine\, brutal killings start to plague the tight knit community. A young boy named Marty Coslaw (Corey Haim) is convinced that the murders are the doing of a werewolf\, and with the help of his Uncle Red (Gary Busey)\, they investigate the crimes. \nSTEPHEN KING’S SILVER BULLET is the rare horror film that’s just as concerned with creating a sense of wonder and enchantment as it is with delivering thrills. And that’s why it’s left such a lasting imprint on us over the years. Come help us welcome Mr. Attias to the stage post-film to hear how the film was created\, what it was like on set\, and what the process was like to collaborate with Stephen King and legendary producer Dino De Laurentiis. Get your questions ready\, because we’re taking questions from the crowd after the Q&A. \nAnd the fun doesn’t stop there. Our co-presenter\, Verbatim Books\, will be in the building with a haunted book table for you to browse through\, featuring all the Stephen King classics\, plus Mr. Attias’s book Directing Great Television: Inside TV’s New Golden Age. Mr. Attias will be signing copies of the book before and after the show. \nWe’ve also got trick or treat candy to give away to everyone who shows up. Pro tip: You might get a little extra more if you come dressed to impress in your best Halloween costume. We’ll do a contest to honor the best costumes of the night on stage before the film starts too. \nOn October 30th\, it’s full moon season at Popcorn Reef. Get ready for a good one. \n\nPlease Note: \n-Doors are at 6:00 PM\, Show will start at 7:00 PM sharp \n-There will be no delivery of tickets via shipping or email – we’ll simply have your name on the list at the door (plus however many tickets you buy). Please bring your ID for verification purposes to check in. We can check in partial parties too\, so if you’re buying for multiple people and you’re arriving at different times\, don’t worry about it. \n-Guest availability is subject to change due to potential illness or unforeseen circumstances. \n-If you have any questions at all\, please contact eddie@popcornreef.com

SUMMARY:Popcorn Reef's Pre-4/20 Movie Party Night featuring IDLE HANDS
DESCRIPTION:**This show is on TUESDAY 4/16 to get you ready for 4/20. It is NOT on 4/20 itself** \nNo smoking is allowed inside the theater \nDoors at 6:30; Show at 7:00 \nPopcorn Reef Sleepover format – FAQ Here – Bring your own chairs or blankets if you so choose (regular seating is always also available) \nIt’s been a real party so far this year at The Adams Ave Theater\, and we wanted to keep the good times rolling. For our 4/20 selection this year\, there were a lot of directions we could have gone in. We figured sticking with the most lighthearted movie of all time about a stoner teen killing his parents and his best friends after his hand is possessed by the devil was the obvious path to take. \nRodman Flender’s IDLE HANDS has always been an enigma to us\, and that’s exactly why it’s remained one of our favorite films 25 years later. Its blend of the late-90s feel-good teen formula with body horror and seriously fucked-up subject matter is something you can toss around in your head for a very long time and never quite get a grip on completely. If you haven’t seen it before\, you’re in for a real treat. \nAs we’ve encouraged you to do for a while now\, please come dressed comfortably in your favorite sleepover attire or whatever floats your boat. We’d love to see some undead folks show up as well. Again\, we will also have an open section for you to bring your own chairs or blankets too. \nOn 4/16\, come kick your 4/20 celebration off with us as we celebrate one of the most underrated films of the 90s. \nIDLE HANDS Synopsis: \nAnton (Devon Sawa) would like very much to go about his daily routine of smoking weed\, watching TV\, and lusting after the girl across the street. The only thing stopping him is his demon-possessed right hand\, which seems determined to kill anyone it encounters. After dropping his parents and his best friends\, the hand sets its sights on Molly (Jessica Alba)\, the punk rock girl of Anton’s affection. Luckily for him\, Pnub and Mick (Elden Henson and Seth Green\, his recently deceased buds) are back from below ground to help the problem get solved. But they better get cracking\, because the hand is out for more than just a killing spree. If it gets its fingers on Molly before midnight on prom night\, her soul is hell-bound. \nIDLE HANDS Trailer: \n \nPlease Note: \n-Doors are at 6:30 PM\, Show will start at 7:00 PM sharp \n-There will be no delivery of tickets via shipping or email – we’ll simply have your name on the list at the door (plus however many tickets you buy). SUMMARY:Screening: ROAD HOUSE
DESCRIPTION:Doors at 6:30; Show at 7:00 \nPopcorn Reef Sleepover format – FAQ Here – Bring your own chairs or blankets if you so choose (regular seating is always also available) \nTo celebrate the one year anniversary of our screening series at The Adams Ave Theater\, we wanted to pick a real crowd pleaser. So here was our brainstorm process. It’s St. Patrick’s week\, which is\, of course\, the best time of the year to get into a bar brawl. And we’re always looking for more ways to celebrate the Great Saint Patrick Swayze. Do you see where we’re headed? \nGrab your philosophy books and get ready to put your dukes up\, folks. We’re taking you back to The Double Deuce for ROAD HOUSE\, Popcorn Reef Sleepover style. Come dressed in your favorite sleepover gear\, or in your favorite bar brawl-ready outfit. \nDalton is back to kick some ass at Popcorn Reef on Wednesday\, March 13th. We didn’t want to do it on the 17th\, because we figured you’d all be too wasted to show up. See you there. \nROAD HOUSE Synopsis: \nA mysterious bouncer named Dalton (Patrick Swayze) is hired to clean up the baddest honkytonk in Missouri. Armed with a black belt in karate and a Ph.D. in philosophy\, Dalton sets out to tame The Double Deuce\, but runs into various forms of resistance along the way. \nROAD HOUSE Trailer:

SUMMARY:Screening: SOCIETY with Director Brian Yuzna In Person At The Adams Ave Theater
DESCRIPTION:If you’re one of the first 75 folks to buy your ticket online\, you’ll get a free collectible ticket at the door! If this message is still up\, collectible tickets are still available. \n*Due to the graphic nature of this film\, no one under 18 will be admitted to this event.* \nDoors at 6:30; Show at 7:00; Q&A starts after the screening of the film \nPopcorn Reef Sleepover format – FAQ Here – Bring your own chairs or blankets if you so choose (regular seating is always also available) \nIt’s only February\, guys\, but it seems like we’re already in playoff mode here at Popcorn Reef. We’re back on February 28th at The Adams Avenue Theater in Normal Heights for what will undoubtedly be our biggest Popcorn Reef Sleepover yet. \nIt’s widely considered one of the most outrageous\, shocking\, and shit-rocking films of all time\, with a final act that takes even the most seasoned genre fans to their body-horror limits. It also needs to be acknowledged more often as a classic of the folk horror subgenre for any Southern Californian who has ever felt that something’s just not quite right. \nAnd the guy who made the movie? He’s a genre film legend\, known for producing movie magic monuments like RE-ANIMATOR and FROM BEYOND\, co-writing films like HONEY\, I SHRUNK THE KIDS\, and directing gruesome love stories like BRIDE OF RE-ANIMATOR and RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD 3. \nJoin us on February 28th as we welcome director Brian Yuzna to Popcorn Reef to celebrate and discuss his opus of the bizarre\, SOCIETY\, which has a firm spot on our personal Mount Rushmore of 80s horror flicks. \nOur love for this movie is not easy to quantify with words. The supreme not-giving-a-fuck-ness of its general attitude\, combined with its wicked sense of humor\, palpable sense of dread\, and its scathing commentary on the ugly undercurrent of Southern California consciousness\, makes for a singular vision that needs to be celebrated\, time and time again. \nJoin us after the film as we break down everything you’ve ever wanted to know about SOCIETY with Mr. Yuzna himself. Who knows\, you might even get the once-in-a-lifetime chance to ask him that question you’ve always wanted an answer to. \nCome dressed to impress in your favorite high society threads\, or come comfortable in your favorite sleepover attire. Or don’t dress up at all. Just make sure you’re there 😎 \nOn February 28th\, we’ll all sing together for the Shunt Fest of the year. Let’s go. \nSOCIETY Synopsis: \nTeenager Bill Whitney has always felt like the odd one out in his wealthy\, upper-class Beverly Hills family. But his sense of alienation takes a sinister turn when he hears an audio recording of his sister’s coming-out party\, which seems to implicate his family and others in a bizarre\, ritualistic orgy. Packing stomach-churning grue courtesy Screaming Mad George (PREDATOR\, BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA) and thought-provoking social commentary in equal measure\, Society is a biting satire that culminates in the most gag-inducing “climax” in all of horror history.

SUMMARY:Screening: SHREDDER ORPHEUS with Writer/Director/Star Robert McGinley
DESCRIPTION:*We have moved this show to a new date. Please join us on 1/24/24 for this bad ass film experience!* (If you have already purchased your ticket and can’t make the new date\, please contact eddie@popcornreef.com for a refund) \nDoors at 6:30; Show at 7:00; Q&A starts after the screening of the film\n\nPopcorn Reef Sleepover format – bring your own chairs or blankets if you so choose (regular seating is always also available; details below) \nBoy\, do we have a treat for you to open things up for 2024 at The Adams Ave Theater. Even for jaded cinephiles like us\, there’s still films out there that haven’t been on our radar. When that’s the case\, it’s usually a wonderful company like AGFA (The American Genre Film Archive) that comes to the rescue and brings a criminally underseen gem back into the zeitgeist. Subsequently\, our mind is blown\, and when we finish the movie we think\, “Damn! I wish I would have known about this movie my entire life.” \nSuch is the case with SHREDDER ORPHEUS\, and we’re beyond thrilled to host the San Diego Premiere of AGFA’s brand new restoration of the film on January 24th in Normal Heights. Plus\, the writer/director/star of the film\, Robert McGinley\, will be joining us in person for a special post-film Q&A after the screening that you’re not going to want to miss. \nThe classic Greek myth of Orpheus is reimagined as a post-apocalyptic skateboard rock opera in SHREDDER. The film was shot and edited using a combination of tape and 16mm film\, ultimately being transferred to 35mm for its final presentation. That process\, combined with the wildly creative production design (which\, mind you\, was all done on a DIY budget)\, creates a unique cinematic aesthetic that we feel can best be described as a fever-induced nightmare experienced through the lens of an 80s tube television. \nWhether you’re a filmmaker\, or you’re just fascinated by the process of how movie magic is made\, SHREDDER ORPHEUS is a must-see. Robert and his team have created a one-of-a-kind experience here that resonates on many levels. The only thing more inspiring than the independent spirit of the film is the storytelling itself. It’s very hard to expand on a classic story in a worthwhile way\, but SHREDDER adds a haunting\, modern message to the Orpheus myth which\, in our opinion\, the Greek mythologists would be very proud of. Also…of course…there’s a lot of really cool music and skateboarding stuff in the film that’s going to look sick up on the big screen. \nOn January 24th\, let’s shred our way to hell! We’ll see you there. \nPLEASE NOTE: \n-“What the hell is Popcorn Reef Sleepover?” \nIt’s a new idea we’ve been working on with The Adams Avenue Theater that’s designed to let you take a night off from 2024 and feel like you’re back in 1980\, or 1990-something. Remember when you could post up on a Friday night\, have some Gushers and a Capri Sun\, and watch whatever was on Cinemax with your friends all night long while your parents had no clue what was happening? That’s basically what we’re going to do here – except in a giant concert hall with alcohol. Pajamas and/or costumes are encouraged\, and if you come in something especially eye-catching\, you might just win a prize. \nWe’ve also decided to open the floor plan up at The Adams to let you take your nostalgia trip a bit further. A portion of the theater floor will be completely open. We encourage you to bring blankets\, pillows\, and whatever else you want to lounge with directly on the ground\, or you can bring your favorite camping chair* to sit in. Don’t worry – if this doesn’t sound appealing\, we will still have a traditional seating area set up as well. This just gives you the option to watch the movie in a couple new ways. \n– (*) If you’re bringing camping chairs\, please only bring those in a single or double format. Anything more heavy duty than that might bother the floors at The Adams. \n-Doors are at 6:30 PM\, Show will start at 7:00 PM sharp \n-There will be no delivery of tickets via shipping or email – we’ll simply have your name on the list at the door (plus however many tickets you buy). Please bring your ID for verification purposes to check in. We can check in partial parties too\, so if you’re buying for multiple people and you’re arriving at different times\, don’t worry about it. \n-Guest availability is subject to change due to potential illness or unforeseen circumstances. Please bear with us during these crazy times. \n-If you have any questions at all\, please contact eddie@popcornreef.com \nSHREDDER ORPHEUS Synopsis: \nThe Greek myth is reimagined as a post-apocalyptic skateboard rock opera in SHREDDER ORPHEUS—a low budget hallucination that drops somewhere between the music video for Devo’s “Whip It\,” a Bones Brigade skate tape\, and a surrealist art project. The story follows Orpheus (director Robert McGinley)\, a rock star who descends to hell in order to save his kidnapped wife (and the universe) from Satan and his hypnotic TV signals. Filmed in Seattle and featuring a rare screen role from Steven Jesse Bernstein—the William S. Burroughs of the Pacific Northwest—SHREDDER ORPHEUS makes its disc and restoration debut with a new preservation from the originalfilm elements.

SUMMARY:Screening: MY DEMON LOVER
DESCRIPTION:Doors at 7\, Show at 7:30 \n**Note – We have moved this show to Friday\, September 15th from its original date of September 14th.** \nNormal Heights\, have you missed us? Because we’ve surely missed you. \nOn Friday\, September 15th\, we’re back to usher in a new wave of screenings at The Adams Avenue Theater. Join us as we kick off the first-ever edition of our new sub-screening series\, Popcorn Reef Sleepover\, with one of the most gleefully bizarre films to emerge out of the 1980s – MY DEMON LOVER. \nThe Scott Valentine-starring romantic-horror-comedy is celebrating a brand new restoration and blu-ray release from Shout! Factory next month\, and we will be one of the first places\, if not the first place\, in the world to screen this new restoration on the big screen. So if you don’t show up\, you’re like…missing out on a moment in film history or something. \nYou’re also going to want to be in the building for the first ever Popcorn Reef Sleepover. “What the hell is Popcorn Reef Sleepover?” you may ask. It’s a brand new idea we’ve been working on all summer with The Adams Avenue Theater that’s designed to let you take a night off from 2023 and feel like you’re back in 1980\, or 1990-something. Remember when you could post up on a Friday night\, have some Gushers and a Capri Sun\, and watch whatever trash was on Cinemax with your friends all night long while your parents had no clue what was happening? That’s basically what we’re going to do here – except in a giant concert hall with alcohol. Pajamas and/or costumes are encouraged\, and if you come in something especially eye-catching\, you might just win a prize. \nWe’ve also decided to open the floor plan up at The Adams to let you take your nostalgia trip a bit further. A portion of the theater floor will be completely open. We encourage you to bring blankets\, pillows\, and whatever else you want to lounge with directly on the ground\, or you can bring your favorite camping chair to sit in*. Don’t worry – if this doesn’t sound appealing\, we will still have a traditional seating area set up as well. This just gives you the option to watch the movie in a couple new ways. \nOn September 15th\, join us for the movie party you’ve been waiting for in Normal Heights. We can’t wait to celebrate with the entire neighborhood! \nMY DEMON LOVER Synopsis:\nThe one-sentence IMDb synopsis is a work of art\, so it is presented here\, unaltered. \nA homeless street musician becomes a demon when sexually aroused. \nMY DEMON LOVER Trailer:
